G8, the Italian Presidency 2009: presentation logo

Logo G8 2009Italy in January 2009 will assume the chairmanship of the G8, the diplomatic forum for dialogue between the Heads of State and Government of the major industrialized countries.

For this occasion today, the Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi, during a press conference held nell’aula X of the National Museum of Roman Baths of Diocletian, presented the official logo of the Italian presidency of the G8.

At the show, which was attended by the foreign minister, Franco Frattini, and the Head of Civil Protection Department, Guido Bertolaso was clear that the chairmanship of the G8 entails a responsibility to organize and host the annual summit of Heads of State and Government of the participating countries and a series of meetings preparatory to the Summit of La Maddalena (scheduled for July).

The logo chosen for the G8 reconstructs the archipelago from the shapes of turtles “Caretta Caretta”, which sometimes calling in the waters of La Maddalena, as if to emphasize that the richness of life protected by the park and the wealth of development opportunities for locals are a precious and delicate unity to be safeguarded at all costs.

The G8 is not an international organization and has an administrative structure with a permanent secretariat. A rolling annual participating countries assume the presidency, during which promote the organization el’agenda the summit. Italy - during the presidency - will therefore have a responsibility to speak on behalf of the G8 and to dialogue with non-participating countries, international organizations, starting by the UN, and civil society organizations.

The rotating presidencies with the following order: France, United States, Great Britain, Russia, Germany, Japan, Italy and Canada. The European Union, although it is not part of this rotation, participates fully in the G8 and is represented by the President of the European Commission and the Head of State or Government of the country which chairs the European Council who participates as an observer.
